Summer Maintenance Tips for Your AC System

Summer continues to bring the heat to homeowners in Smithfield, VA. As a result, you’ll want to ensure your air conditioner can get you through the rest of the hot season without breakdowns. It’s also important to keep your AC system running smoothly so that you don’t unintentionally raise your monthly utility bill. For savings this summer, maintain your AC system by replacing the filter, cleaning around the compressor and caring for the thermostat.

Check Your Air Filter

If you have a pleated air filter in your return vent, you need to replace it at least every 90 days. You might need a new filter after 30 to 60 days if you’re compromising your indoor air with pets or cigarette smoke.

You’ll know that you need to replace the filter just by looking at it. Or you’ll know it’s time for a replacement when the AC system weakly blows out air or shuts down without actually cooling the home.

Clean Around the Compressor

Your air conditioner’s compressor sits outside, where the heat absorbed from your home gets released into the environment. This unit needs to stay clean or that heat will simply return to your home.

You can clean the grille and cut back any vegetation around the compressor by yourself. The rest you should leave up to a professional as a part of preventive AC maintenance.

Inspect the Thermostat

Open the back cover of the thermostat and use a soft cloth to clean the inside of tit. It’s important that the thermostat read your indoor temperature accurately; otherwise, your AC system will turn on and off at the wrong times. Create a cooling schedule if you haven’t already because that will cut down on unnecessary energy usage.
